2020 Internship Blog Post #15

This week, working on my internship from home, I read a few more articles that were on the intern reading list that my supervisor had sent me to read. I choose to read two articles related to video games and video game archives. Video games have been a passion of mine since I was young enough to play them on the computer or hold a controller or a Gameboy in my hands. In reading the first article entitled “U. of Mich. video game cache serves as an archive, at play,” it talked about how this very different archive accessions their materials. This article was by Mike Householder in 2017 and was published in AP News. They even allow people to play video games at this archive, as well. They even have a budget to buy certain video games as they are released. They make a point in the article that they don’t have every video game ever made but they have roughly 7,000 titles. In my opinion that is amazing. I am originally from Michigan and used to live not far from the University of Michigan. ...

This week, while working from home on all school work including my internship, I created a history bio for the Burnett House. It is mostly completed, and I am just in the editing stages. I have had one of my colleagues look over it to see what her thoughts were. I will also be editing it a bit further. I want it to be absolutely perfect. My supervisor on the STARS project wanted me to start on some readings on archives, several of which peeked my interest, with one specifically because of my love and newfound passion for digital tools as a method for historical preservation.             After this academic school year, I have really discovered a passion for archives and all the work that is done at them. I want to learn as much as possible about them because I am hoping to do a PhD in library science once I graduate from UCF. As I mentioned, my supervisor on the STARS portion of my internship has assigned some readings about...

This week, working from home on my internship with the UCF Special Collections and University Archives, I have been focused on completing the Excel spread sheet for the STARS website. I am nearly finished with the spread sheet. The building inventory sheet was in numerical order, which makes sense, instead of alphabetical order. Consequently, I was having to go back and add buildings I had missed. It is quite interesting what a totally different job at an internship at Special Collections and University Archives entails. I am enjoying getting the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of multiple jobs at this internship. It is a very different experience working from home on an internship, but it is the new normal I suppose as we are doing this for classes and most everyone has to work from home now as well. I do enjoy working on all of my school work and my internship from home; I just wish it was under better circumstances. I am lucky that I will be d...

This week, I am still unable to go into UCF Special Collections and University Archives. I have since emailed Ms. Mundy and purchased a voice recorder to record the oral history interview. However, I have not received an email back from her yet. I have still been working on creating questions just in case Ms. Mundy does get back to me via email and wants to do the oral history interview for hours towards my internship. I will submit them to my supervisor and my professor Dr. French for approval once they are completed. However, I was hoping to hear back from Ms. Mundy first. I will still submit my questions even if I don’t hear back from her.             On another note, as I mentioned in last week’s post, I was given another assignment to assist in finishing out the rest of my internship hours. I am assisting with the STARS website, which means I am working on the Historic Building Tour of ...

This week has been an interesting and challenging one for my internship. Coronavirus has spread around the world seemingly in the blink of an eye. Monday would have been my first day back at my internship at UCF Special Collections and University Archives in person, following spring break. However, due to the spread of coronavirus I will be unable to return in person the Special Collections and University archives for the rest of the semester. This is really upsetting for me because I really enjoy working there and I have learned a great deal there. I do hope I can finish creating the finding aid as a volunteer later on. All classes, including internships, are online and most staff, including all of our professors in the history department, are working remotely to keep everyone safe from getting sick. I am glad that the university and the government decided that it would be best for everyone to make all classes online. I am very glad that much of the u...

This week, at the UCF Special Collections and University Archives, I finished up the current draft of the finding aid I had been working on. I had to add a few extra finishing touches that I thought were interesting that I didn’t know about before starting on the creation of the finding aid, and ultimately the public can see these additions to the finding aid. Specifically, I included information about how the collection was processed and what I did in processing the collection. For example, I discussed in this section of the finding aid how the collection looked when it was given to UCF Special Collections and University Archives, and how I rehoused the documents in acid free folder boxes and archival safe clear sleeves for photos and transparencies. I also discussed how I removed all of the staples, paperclips, and binder clips from the documents. This section is traditionally only a few sentences. However, when I first had written this secti...

This week, at UCF Special Collections and University Archives, I began working on a second draft of the finding aid in Microsoft Word. I suspect there will be at least one or two more drafts before the information is ready to be put into the program that will ultimately upload the finding aid I have created onto the library website for Special Collections and University Archives. This week I did not really have to take the cart out of the stacks in Special Collections since I was primarily just organizing the finding aid on a folder level by city and then in alphabetical order. If there are folders that have the same name due to the similarity the folder goes by numerical order, with the earlier dates coming first and the more recent dates after. It is a system that will make a lot of sense for anyone using the finished finding aid.             As I work on each process of creating the finding aid, I find that the things I was co...
